Acoustic Partial Discharge Analyzer

Acoustic Partial Discharge AnalyzerMonitor the condition of medium-voltage cable terminations and joints without disturbing normal service operation.

Doble's TransiNor office created the Acoustic Partial Discharge Analyzer (APDA) to detect defects in cable accessories before they break down. Detect partial discharges by moving the tip of the hot sensor and gently pressing it against the termination. Thousands of medium-voltage cable terminations have been successfully tested in service.

Features and Benefits

  • Monitors acoustic signals using an ultrasonic sensor in an electrically insulating glass fibre rod.
  • Provides quality assurance of new terminations during commissioning and maintenance based renewal for existing cable systems.
  • Detects partial discharges (PD) in other types of equipment.
  • Displays results on an LCD screen during measurements. Data can be stored and transferred to a PC via an RS-232 serial communication interface.
  • Portable, battery powered, and easy to use via menu-controlled software.

Applications

APDA offers two measuring modes: continuous and phase

Continuous mode provides:

  • RMS signal during one power cycle
  • Peak signal during one power cycle
  • Degree of modulation with the power cycle
  • Degree of modulation with twice the power cycle.

Continuous mode gives initial information about the signal, indicating a partial discharge. 50 Hz (Frequency 1) and 100 Hz (Frequency 2) content indicate that a partial discharge is present.

Phase mode provides phase angle and pulse occurrence.

Sensitivity

IEC 502 specifies that the partial discharge level according to IEC 270 should be below 10%. The sensitivity of the APDA is 5-50%, depending on the design and material used in the cable accessory. This is based on the comparison of electrically and accoustically measured signals.
